Ford Taurus Along the way, Ford has made some 500 changes to the Taurus, changes that were already scheduled for the mid-cycle freshening of the Five Hundred. The general body shape of the new Taurus is the same as that of the previous Five Hundred, a large, front-wheel-drive family sedan, but almost everything else has changed for the better.

Is the fluid bright cherry red, or dark red/brown ? Dark is bad.

Does the fluid smell burned ? If either is true, you probably have internal damage.

Last drive the car for about 10 minutes. Park on a level surface and check the fluid level.

Clogged transmission vents have been a common problem for years. Fortunately this is one of those rare problems with a Ford Transmission that does **not** require a trip to the trany rebuild center.

There's a vent kit (1C3Z-7034-AA) available. You'll need to check that this is the right one for the year and transmission you have (probably an AX4N). If you're handy with basic auto service techniques, you likely can install the new vent. Otherwise, $150 should do it at the local dealer.

In the mean time, be sure to keep the fluid level in the full range, and use only Mercon V. If the dip stick was out AND you live in either a dusty or wet climate, consider having a transmission fluid flush now.

This car should have been in to visit the dealer or a trusted mechanic to have the tranny flushed at 30K miles. But, since you may need some service after all, that won't be a problem.

Remember, if you perform the service yourself, the transmission pan gasket is "re-usable". These gaskets will get twisted and crooked on you very easily when installing the pan and they will leak. Be very thorough.
