Ford Taurus Along the way, Ford has made some 500 changes to the Taurus, changes that were already scheduled for the mid-cycle freshening of the Five Hundred. The general body shape of the new Taurus is the same as that of the previous Five Hundred, a large, front-wheel-drive family sedan, but almost everything else has changed for the better.

I have a 96 taurus sw. It run like if is missing a shift, and the o/d light start blink after a few minute of driving the car.

Default 99 Ford Taurus

Mine does the same thing. Came to this forum to see what I can do.

Car gets warm (running high heat on defrost will keep it from acting up) then the speedometer quits working and the transmission won't shift from low. If the heat persists then the o/d off light blinks and it shifts, but roughly.

Parking it and turning off the engine and running the blower with the high heat on defrost will get it to quit acting up.

Replaced water pump, flushed cooling system twice, flushed transmission. To no avail. Note that the temp gauge is not HOT, just normal running temp.

Thinking about putting in a cooler thermostat.

This is the only problem I'm having with this car.

There's a sensor on the tranny. Might be that. Also try disconnecting the negative cable for around an hour. That should reset the computer and all tranny settings back to normal

I had exactly the same problem and replaced the speed sensor in the back of the tranny. Fixed it perfectly for less than $100 total. Runs better than new. o/d off light came on, speedometer quit working, hard shift or no shift until o/d light came on. Ran the heater on high to keep the temp down, and it worked until it got hotter. Bad scene in Dallas when 105 and in traffic with the defroster running high heat.
