Ford Taurus Along the way, Ford has made some 500 changes to the Taurus, changes that were already scheduled for the mid-cycle freshening of the Five Hundred. The general body shape of the new Taurus is the same as that of the previous Five Hundred, a large, front-wheel-drive family sedan, but almost everything else has changed for the better.

Red face oil pump

my buddy has a 99 taurus and he said his oil light is on but he has proper oil level. He said he started the car and shortly after the oil light came on and he could hear the valve train chattering really bad. If the oil pump has failed is it a common problem for this vehicle?

The oil pressure warning light is switched on at very low oil pressure if the switch is working properly. I do not know of a test for your switch. You need to check the oil pressure with a mechanical guage that you screw into the oil pressure sender (switch) location (back of engine on OHV and above the oil filter on the DOHC).

The oil pressure should be 40 to 60 psi at 2,500 rpm according to my manual, so likely 20 or more at idle. Some engines survive at 10 psi so long as pressure rises with engine rpm.

The chattering valve train may be the lifters that are starved of oil (due to low oil pressure) or just faulty. Other causes of low oil pressure may be a plugged oil filter, dirty oil (overdue for change) or general engine wear. I have not heard of any particular problems with the oil pump or any other internal part of the engine.

How many miles on the engine?
