Ford Taurus Along the way, Ford has made some 500 changes to the Taurus, changes that were already scheduled for the mid-cycle freshening of the Five Hundred. The general body shape of the new Taurus is the same as that of the previous Five Hundred, a large, front-wheel-drive family sedan, but almost everything else has changed for the better.

Smile 96 taurus tranny problems

I just bought a 96. Love it! power steering pump power asst. censor. went on it. Steering works great now. Now the tranny is acting up. Like tonight after driving home went for a short drive and it acted like it did not want to shift out of second gear. 20 mph for 3 miles. shut the car off for about 5 minutes and it works but still not right it want to shift back and forth and the rpms go from 2000 to 3500-, 4000 while driviing home. Cruise control working but it feels like you are tapping the gas. Please help me ?!

try the tr sensor (transmission range sensor) its located on the transmision under the aircleaner, follow the gearshift cable to the trans and right under that will be the tr sensor.

I had the same problem and it turned out to the be speed sensor. If the transmission doesn't know how fast you are really going it will not shift.
If replacing the sensor Goon suggested doesn't work I would bet $$ it is what I said.
Now...anyone know how to fix my problem yet?

The cruise control problem is a faulty throttle position sensor (TPS), and it could be affecting the transmission also. The TPS is a variable resistance sensor and there are faulty segments. You can check the resistance at the sensor with an ohmmeter and you will see an uneven increase/decrease in resistance as you open and close the throttle with the ignition off and the electrical connection disconnected.

Check and replace the TPS before making any other changes since the PCM uses the TPS in its management of the transmission.

Hope this helps.
