Ford Taurus Along the way, Ford has made some 500 changes to the Taurus, changes that were already scheduled for the mid-cycle freshening of the Five Hundred. The general body shape of the new Taurus is the same as that of the previous Five Hundred, a large, front-wheel-drive family sedan, but almost everything else has changed for the better.

gorean0, Did the steering gear come filled with fluid? Most problems I've heard of when working on a steering gear is a air bubble is trapped. Was there any directions specifying on how to "bleed out" the system? Sometimes, all you have to do is hold the steering wheel tight and turn it full lock to lock to work out the air bubble.

well new here trying to do research on daughters car, 99 taurus bought it and a month later droppe 900 for rack and pinion, two months after that brake booster and six months new power steering pump. ever since then the car whines and hard to steer. the mechanic said that it was normal and once the air bleeds out it will be ok, 3 months later still the same. i am not a ford fan and now i know why. any help would be appreciated on how to resolve this issue, one is sell it lol

Check the P/S fluid level with the engine running, might have a low fluid level. If the P/S fluid level is ok I would suspect the P/S pump is bad.

my girlfriends 98 taurus isnt holding powersteering fluid for more than a few miles at a time. i noticed, when we parked that the fluid was gushing out from behind the drivers side tire. i heard that could be close to $1000 to fix. is their an easy or cheaper fix than replacing the rack and pinion on it? or at least a simplier fix? weve hit hard times and dont have anywhere near that kind of money. is it true theyll have to remove the engine to fix it??

Exact same thing happend to mine and you want to get it fixed soon i waited and one morning the power steering pump crapped out. Crank the wheel and look at the boots they are usually excessivly stretched out. It could be as simple as replacing a boot or you may have to replace the rack and pinion as in my case

Good luck with your Taurus.

If it is leaking from the boot on the rack and pinion then you will need to replace the rack and pinion, as it would be leaking internally. It could also be the p/s hoses, you need to find the source of the leak first. You don't need to remove the engine for either of those items.

Hello! I apologize if I'm dragging up a dead thread, but I had this problem with my '98 Taurus and wanted to add my 2 cents.

Mine was leaking from the rack and pinion also. The PS fluid was leaking out almost as fast as I could put it in. I took the boot cover off and inspected the inside of the rack and pinion shaft. If you look just inside the shaft, you will see a metal disc that has four holes in it. On my car, this disc had untightened itself and was leaking around the threads. I tightened it back up and the leak has stopped. This is fairly simple to do and will cost you nothing. But, you have to make sure you get it very tight or else it will become loose again and you're right back where you started. I used a long pair on needle nosed pliers and inserted the tips into two of the four holes in the disc (sorry, I don't know the technical name for the part) and tightened it that way. Don't use a screwdriver because you can't get it tight enough with one.

I am in no way a mechanic, but I do like to work on my own car whenever I can to save myself money. I just wonder how many people have had this same problem and have taken their car to the shop and were charged with replacing the entire rack and pinion?

Again, I apologize if I'm pulling up old threads, but I found this forum while trying to figure out what was wrong with my car and hopefully it will help someone else out there with the same problem.

Excellent info, I have a Power Steering leak, and replacing the R&P unit seemed to be the way all things pointed to on the net. This sounds like a great alternative.

Does anyone know if there is a writeup with pictures for this, as I've never worked on a R&P unit b4 and would like to get some idea of what I should be looking for.

thx.........kd
