Default Ford Tempo 93 - 2.3L - High idle issu

Hello all,

I've been searching, bringing my car to the garage in order to fix this issu but finally i still experience the issu.

Here the symptom of my issu. High idle will occur on longish run, 3 hours or more. My tempo does not have cruise Control but i was able to keep a speed of 100KM/h without touching the gaz pedal. While driving, if i put the car in neutral, the RPM go higher, i notice the issu and the engine was rushing as more as 4000. It was going higher than this but i put up back on Drive not to do engine damage.

My car as 3 speed automatic Trans. The service engine soon light is always on. Even when the car runs okay. I've changed the EGR Valve and a electronic module link to the egr valve ( which i don't remember the name cause it was the auto mechanic which changed it). Rotor and cap distributor, sparkplugs and wires changed.

The car will never stall, just high RPM. If i am parked on the side of the road and have the issu, if i put it on Drive, the car will not move fast. The rpm will decrease fast to normal speed and the car will want to go forward and i will need to push the brake pedal to make a stop. If i turn off the car and start it right after, it will idle normal but because the motor is warm up, it will do it again shortly after.

Do you have any idea of what could be wrong ?

Thanks for your time,

Danny

A sticking Idle air control valve or a vacuum leak.

Thanks for your feedback guys. I found some info about Idle Air Control Valve on the web and i though maybe this info could be useful for others...

There are to different type of IAC Valve, cleanable and not cleanable.

Not sure if the valve installed on the tempo is cleanable or not...i'll check this out.

Also, i imagine that you called it a vacuum tree it's because the vacuum is connected on the same 'Branch'. I guess if i located the vacuum connector on the EGR valve, i am pretty close to that vacuum tree...

Here other info about cleaning that IAC Valve...

CAUTION: Do not clean black plastic IAC valves. Use only specified cleaner. Do not spray directly on throttle plate or use any type of scrubbing method. Do not run engines of vehicles with mass airflow sensors during cleaning.

RECOMMENDED CLEANING PROCEDURE

Ensure IAC valve is operating properly.
Remove air cleaner outlet tube.
Disconnect fuel charging wiring connector from IAC valve.
Connect Rotunda Air Bypass Actuator 113-00009 and Injector Tester/Cleaner 113-00001 or equivalent.
Start the actuator. Do not start engines of vehicles equipped with mass airflow sensors.
Spray Carburetor Tune-Up Cleaner D9AZ-19579-BA (ESR-M14P9-A) or equivalent into IAC valve passage for five seconds while actuator is operating.
Turn the actuator off. Allow solvent to soak for 15 minutes.
Turn actuator on.
Spray carburetor cleaner into IAC valve passage for no more than six seconds.
Turn actuator off.
Install air cleaner outlet tube. Start actuator and engine and run engine for one minute to dry out solvent residue.
Disconnect actuator from IAC valve. Connect fuel charging wiring connector to IAC valve.
Start engine and check for normal operation.

Alternate Cleaning Procedure
CAUTION: The Idle Air Control (IAC) valve CANNOT be cleaned unless removed from the engine.

NOTE: This procedure should only be done when recommended tools are not available.

ALTERNATE CLEANING PROCEDURE

Remove the IAC valve from the throttle body.
Remove the electrical solenoid assembly from the mechanical portion of the IAC valve by removing the two screws, then sliding the mechanical portion away from the solenoid. CAUTION: Do not exceed three minutes soak time, and do not use choke cleaner as this will damage an internal for-ring.
Soak the mechanical portion in Carburetor Tune-Up Cleaner D9AZ-19579BA (ESR-M14P9-A) or equivalent for two to three minutes maximum.
With the mechanical portion completely submerged, shake in all directions: up, down, right and left. Then push in on the rod that mates with the solenoid assembly, and again shake in all directions with the unit submerged and the rod held in as far as possible.
Remove the unit from the cleaning fluid and dry out thoroughly using shop air.
************************************************** *********

I will first off checking if there is any vacuum leak than if i do not find any leaks, i will go and clean that valve and see if this resolve the issu.

Hope this could help people out and i will be back to tell you if that solve the issu.

ps: Might take some days cause it is freaken cold in here... -25-30 Celcius. I'll wait it gets a little warmer
