Default Mystery pipe

I'll do my best to try to explain where this pipe is located. There is an approximately 3/4 inch pipe that comes off the exhaust manifold to what I assume is the EGR valve. Near where it joins the EGR valve there is a small fitting pointing towards the rear/ passenger side. Seems to be exhaust coming out of it (until I stuck a screw in it). There was a piece of pipe coming off it but it's broken off and I have no idea where it's supposed to go. Someone had suggested I might have a vacuum leak giving me some other problems I'm having and I'm wondering if it might be from where the other end of this pipe is supposed to hook on. I think I'm going to have to break down and go out and buy a manual.

It could have came off the Smog/Air pump if your car has one, I am not sure. Some of the older Fords had small pipes that came off the "Y" Pipe off the exhaust.

Oops. I should have mentioned it's a 1992, 4 cylinder automatic.

if it is a pipe coming off the exhaust manafold it is the egr tube. you dont reallly need it to pass emisisons either it just helps. as far as its mechinical funtion tot he engine thats widely arguable. now there are no new replacements for the piping unles you get reallly lucky. j/y is your best bet.
be shure to plug the other end of the pipe the side that attaches to the intake manafold, the egr valve is to the right of the i.a.c. and to the left of the throttle body back side of the intake manafold.

Where does the other end attach to the intake manifold? That's the part I can't figure out. The pipe I'm wondering about is about 1/4" in diameter.

the egr valve is located on the back side of the intake manafold yet stil visable from a top view, where the pipe conects to the vavle on the bottom of the valve wil require a lil more looking. the egr valve is located to the right of the i.a.c. and to the left of the throttlebody.
if you stil dont understand, its time to get a manual...

That 1/4 inch tube connects to the PFE sensor mounted on the firewall, just inches from the egr. It senses how much the egr is open by backpressure in the exhaust. The hose is a special material, becuase your dealing with exhaust, which is hot. Vacuum line will work for a few days, but then will burn.

Thanks. That's exactly what I was looking for. Could that be causing it to surge while driving and to bog when I start out from a light when it's warmed up?

Well, I got a piece of DPFE hose at the dealer (@$8.20/ ft) and put it on but it's working exactly the same. Looks like I'm going to have to pick up a code reader.

if the car is surging it sounds like someting fuel related.
when you say bog how bad do you mean?

one thing ive seen cause (simmiliar) symptoms is the maf being cloged up with junk.
take of the mass air flow sensor from the intake hosing leave it atatched to the top of the air intake box if you want and just remove the lid, look inside youl see 2 lil sensors lil wire's if you will.
themselvs and the path around them should be relatively clean.
if not you can a few different routes on this just dont spray anything under pressure point blank at it, alchol in a spray bottle has worked for me countles times and it evaporates with no chance of it leaking down onto the lil sensor board.
in any event allow it to completly dry before re-instalation.

get those codes read to man...
