Ford Tempo The Ford Tempo is an American-built two-door coupe and four-door sedan produced by the Ford Company from 1984 to 1994. It was the successor to the Ford Fairmont, and was replaced in 1994 by the Ford Contour. The Tempo was part of a rejuvenation by Ford to offer more environmentally friendly, fuel efficient, and more modern styled models to compete with the imports.

The pump is in the tank, which needs to be removed to gain access.

Before you do this, how certain are you that it really is the pump ? These things rarely just stop completely. It could be just a bad fuel pump relay.

Unhappy Humming ?

I was told that the humming that I hear when I could drive it means a bad Fuel Pump. Its been cutting off since I bought it. This is the first time it just won't start.

Ahh ! If you can hear it humming while you are, that is a sure sign it is going bad.

As I said, it is in the tank. You can do it yourself if you are good around cars and have a friend to help drop the tank. Hopefully the strap and bolts aren't in too bad of shape.

While your there, replace the fuel filter. It might require a special tool, but most auto parts store have a free/low cost rental program for these things.

Question Getting to the Fuel Pump

Its an 88 Ford Tempo, someone told me I can get to it from inside the car. Others are telling me I have to jack it up.

Before replacing the pump, you should have triggered the fuel inertial cut off switch. Did you press the button back in so that it is on?

When you first turn the key on, do you hear the pump humm for a second or two?
If you are not sure, have some one open the gas cap, and listen there when you turn the key on.

Did you change the fuel filter?

The relays, just pull out and plug back in.
