Ford Tempo The Ford Tempo is an American-built two-door coupe and four-door sedan produced by the Ford Company from 1984 to 1994. Default weird clanking noise

I have a 94 tempo gl, and it makes a horrible clanking noise. It seems to be coming from one of the accessories. The noise stops when the serpentine belt is removed, and returns when it is put back on. I replaced the idler pulley, and the belt itself. It sounds like the crankshaft pulley, or the idler pulley or from that area might be making the noise. The noise gets louder when i put the car into drive and quiets a bit when it is in neutral. I am completely lost as to what to replace next. Has anyone had a similar problem, and any suggestions as to what i might do to fix this problem.

It could be the harmonic balancer these cars are famous for them to discitigrate the rubber from them. Also check the belt tensoiner pulley and all the others while you are in there.

I also have the same problem. I've been putting it in neutral every time I come to a stop because otherwise it makes that weird clanking noise. I notice this is the case on a lot of other tempos on the road as well.

I have the exact same problem and im shure it's the CP (crank pully). I don't have an engine hoist to raise the engine to change the CP nor do I Have the money to pay someone to do it, so im open to any advice. I was thinking of cutting out a CP sized hole in the wheel well to replace it and then pop rivet some fresh metal in it's place. The car is loded with every option and everything works...except the CP, and it only has 57000 mi on it. It would be a shame to sell it for parts just because it's worth more for parts in this condition.

Around $100 for new pulley if you do it yourself, and I heard anywhere from $500 - $1.000 for a shop quotes.

Default replacing it

ok, to replace the pulley by yourself without pulling the motor isn't easy. you're going to have to drop the passenger side motor mount to lower the engine, then you're going to have to notch the firewall to reach the bolt on it. after that you're going to have to use an impact gun to get it off, and pray that it does. if it won't come off get a big breaker bar on it, and let the car sit on the breaker bar so it's constantly applying pressure . after you get it off, just install like normal. hope this helps.

My 91 Tempo also had a strange clanking noise. The car was noisest when going down a curvy road. At first the mechanic thought it was the belt tensioner. After it was replaced the noise continued. I took it back to him half a dozen times before he figured it out. The heat shield on the exhaust was loose. It took less then 5 minutes to tighten it up.
