Ford TempoThe Ford Tempo is an American-built two-door coupe and four-door sedan produced by the Ford Company from 1984 to 1994. It was the successor to the Ford Fairmont, and was replaced in 1994 by the Ford Contour. The Tempo was part of a rejuvenation by Ford to offer more environmentally friendly, fuel efficient, and more modern styled models to compete with the imports.
It appears that my harmonic balancer is going bad. The loud clanking noise has increased in volume and frequency. If I don't repair it, how long do I have before total failure, and what is the outcome of the failure?????
Has anyone tried to replace HB without pulling the engine? I tried unhooking the motor mount and lowering the engine, but the wheel well was still in the way.

Reason: added question
It might last 6 months but will leave you stranded, with no water pump or alternator turning. I lowered the motor like you did then cut out the fender well with a reciprocating saw and went through about 3 blades that kept busting off, but finally got a v notch big enough to get the pulley off. Then I had to use an impact wrench to get the bolt off of pulley as it kept turning with just a ratchet on it and I couldn't hold pulley fom turning.
Kando.
Thanks. I have a mechanic neighbor that says if I drop the frame support and the stabilizer bar, that the engine should drop far enough to no need to do any cutting. Did you try to remove them???
Loneleader.
I lowered it until the top of the motor was hitting the frame at the top of the inside fender well, and you still have to notch the frame, has this mechanic did this before ? Do a search on this site and I am not the only one who had to notch the frame. Lets us know how you make out.
My mechanic wanted to charge me $650 for labor to replace the Harmonic balancr but when he told me that he had to pull the engine and that it would take 9.5 hours, I did the math and asked him if his shop rates had dropped. He didn't answer right away and when he did, his answer didn't sound like the truth. I borrowed a neighbors impact wrench and two-jaw puller and dropped the engine as was instructed. I did have to drop the front sway bar with the frame supports and remove the bracket protecting the fuel pressure regulator, but from start to finish it only took 2 hours and I didn't have to cut out the wheel well. I figure I made $325.00 per hour. WOW!!!!!!
I also removed the bracket protecting the fuel pressure regulator, but then the water pump pulley was hitting the inside fender well, or maybe it was just tight and the sway bar was holding the motor up. Anyways I'm glad it went smooth for you and you saved a pile of money. That garage I'm sure would of done like you and did it in 2 hours also, but would of stiffed you 9.5 hours labour. I hate garages !!!!!!!!!!
