Ford ThunderBirdFord thought they'd take their own stab at the nostalgia business. There are quite a few last-century icons that wear the blue oval. For a revival subject, why not use a car famous enough to have been the subject of Beach Boys songs, starred in George Lucas movies, and has been gone long enough to be missed? Why not indeed. In 2002, the Thunderbird was reborn.
I have a 1997 4.6 liter V8 thunderbird and am experiencing a strange idling issue upon ignition - when I start the car (without hitting the gas at all), the rpm's start at around 900 or so, then goes down to 200, it then goes back up to around 700, goes back down to around 300, and then finally levels off around 700.
I replaced the IAC valve, the PCV valve, cleaned the K&N air filter, and the mass air flow sensor. I have added new plugs and wires as well. The fuel filter was replaced approximately 10K miles ago at the most.
I have not tried disconnecting the battery yet, so I am going to try that next. In the mean-time, any suggestions would be appreciated!
Get ready for the 351 boss build this summer, 4v closed chamber heads, 2.25/1.75 valves, .750 lift, 12.5:1 piistons, wieand tunnel ram, nitrous, I think its gonna roar!
Well, I tried a computer reset and it is still acting funny. I am going to check for vacuum leaks as soon as I can. If that does not work it out, I am going to have to break down and take it in to get diagnosed...
Also, I forgot to mention - this started happening about a week after I got the car back from Ford to get my body work done from my accident...they replaced the right fender, header panel, lights, and bumper assembly...
Well I would take it back to them!! The only thing I want to warn u about, is if they find it is not an accident related item causing the problem, u are responsible for the repair(s). I would call ur insurance company and let them know before u take it back to the same Ford dealer if u decide to go that route....

Thanks for the information. I am taking it to a Goodyear Tire Source this Saturday - the manager there is a good friend of mine and said he will look at it free of charge. I am beginning to wonder if it is an O2 sensor problem - the diagnostics is reporting that both Bank 1 and Bank 2 are too rich. One thing I do know is that troubleshooting these types of problems can be frustrating! Thanks again for your help. As soon as I know what the problem is, I'll let you know!
