Ford ThunderBirdFord thought they'd take their own stab at the nostalgia business. There are quite a few last-century icons that wear the blue oval. For a revival subject, why not use a car famous enough to have been the subject of Beach Boys songs, starred in George Lucas movies, and has been gone long enough to be missed? Why not indeed. In 2002, the Thunderbird was reborn.
I have been facing following problems with my 1964 TBird and are looking for some expert advise
aa) When I turn on the egnition key I get power, lights etc. however the car will not start, neither in park or neutrala. It is however possible to start the car from the engine bay with a wire. Following this problem I cannot get down the top and I believe that this problem is due to some block preventing the top going up and down when driving. I have concluded that my car think it is driving even when in Park or neutral.
bb) My distributor is/was not fixed and the timing was therefore not very reliable. In the process of fixing this problem I need to know where I can order new points and condensator, or do I need a new distributor??
Hope that this problem will be solved with the help of the forum members.
I would pull the distributer out as well as #1 spark plug. Find TDC (compression stroke on cylinder #1. I would then order the new Petronix Electronic Ignition system for the ol '64. It replaces the old points & condensor and uses a magnetic "trigger fire" type system, much more modern & reliable. I would also check your distributers vacuum advance pod & make sure it works (holds vacuum) at this point. Drop in the "improved" distributer and check the 0 dgree location on your harmonic balancer next. The outter ring may have slipped from the inner ring giving you a false timming mark reading. If so you can remove the orginal harmonic balancer and replace it or make yourself some new timing makes on the old one. Report back to use after you have done all of this.

you may wish to check for voltage to the coil. Could be ignition switch problems. If you cannot find ignition parts at local auto parts stores you can go on line at rockauto.com. There may also be other places on line that you can find parts as well.
as for the distributor and ignition coil.....I replaced mine with these parts from Larry's Mustang & Thunderbird Parts located in California on my 66 T-bird.
Petronix Electronic Ignition System, (part # B12000BK), and Petronix "HiPo" Ignition coil, (part # B12029A).....reset the timing....now runs like a charm.

Hope this helps
