Hello, Girlfriends parents have a 1995 FORD THUNDERBIRD LX 4.6 V8 they are going to give us,problem is it won't start,it cranks and there is a spark,just wont start.I was told that just before it stopped running there grandson was driving it around the neighborhood until it ran out of gas and died,after they put some more gas in it it wouldn't start. Any idea's? i'm kinda hoping it's something simple like a fuel pump relay but i'm not sure as I really haven't had a chance to look it over.Sometime this week we will have it towed to my house then I will be able to take a better look at it.Any help would really be appreciated!
Find the fuel pump relay (use owners manual) & try swapping it out with another one under the hood. Try resetting the fuel inertia switch & replace the fuel filter too.
Have your girl turn the key on- not start, while you get down by the gas tank. Listen to see if you can hear the fuel pump come on...

Well I finally got the car to my house and I can't hear any noise from the fuel tank and when I take the gas cap off there's not the usual pressure release noise you would normally hear when you take the cap off.I found the fuel pump inertia switch and the red button is all the way down,can't be pushed down down, is it supposed to be like that? Lastly where can I find the connector to hook up a scan tool? Check engine light stays on! I don't have a tool to check fuel pressure yet! I need to work on my tool collection.
He didn't mean for you to listen to it release pressure. He meant that your fuel pump is in the tank and that when you turn the key to on you should hear it run for perhaps 2 seconds while it primes. If you do not hear it prime you can chek your fuses, and EEC and Fuel pump relays, if theyh are good, and you already checked that your inertia switch is depressed, your pump is probably bad. Before you change it, you may want to check to make sure that it is getting power but not fireing up.
Most '95s are OBD1 not OBD II.
IF OBD II it should be under the dash to the right of the steering column. IF ti is n;t there, there should be a label stating where it is.
If it is OBD 1 then you don't need a scanner, all you need is a four inch piece of wire.

yeah, I didn't hear anything from the pump, what I was talking about was how usually when you remove your gas cap you can hear air pressure realeasing, well when I pulled my cap off I didn't get that,so it's like there's no pressure in the fuel line. Could that be a faulty pump? or something else? I was gonna pull the fuel filter and replace it today but it started raining and I have no garage.Is it possible I could just have a clogged filter?
I know what you were talking about. It is not relevant to not starting, it has to do with vapor recovery and anti-polution.
If your fuel pump does not prime - that has nothing to do with a clogged filter.
Could you ALSO have a clogged filter? Yes.
If your pump isn't pumping... that is the issue to address first.

ok, thanks,I guess the next thing I wanna try is replacing the fuel pump relay,I wanna rule out all the small stuff first before I go and replace the pump because unfortunately I don't have the tools or the place to safely remove my gas tank and replace the pump myself.
I agree... easy stuff first.
You may have 4 wires to the tank because you'll have the fuel pump, and the fuel level sending unit. If you obtain a wiring diagram you'll know which wires should have 12 volts when someone turns the key on for the pump to prime. I'd check there, before dropping the tank.

You can check the relay without buying a new to test it.

ok,so I was just told by the previous owner, the inlaws,that the gas gauge may be broken,so there might not be any gas in the car! Right now the gauge shows half a tank but they said it always shows half so I think i'm gonna get me some fuel injenction cleaner and some gas and see what happens!
I spent a day and a half troubleshooting why the generator in my motor home wasn't getting fuel with 3/4s of a tank. I had replaced a section of fuel line that squirrels chewed through, and the wire to the sending unit (which I thought was for the fuel pump). When I repaired the wire and the guage showed empty, I thought that another wire had an open in it.
I filled her up in preparation for the trip, and the generator got fuel, what a waste of time.
