Ford ThunderBird Ford thought they'd take their own stab at the nostalgia business. There are quite a few last-century icons that wear the blue oval. For a revival subject, why not use a car famous enough to have been the subject of Beach Boys songs, starred in George Lucas movies, and has been gone long enough to be missed? Why not indeed. In 2002, the Thunderbird was reborn.

Red face '94, starting/battery issues

the long-winded version...
For several months now I have been having problems with my '94 thunderbird. The battery would just die out of nowhere. It would start on a jump and be fine for days, maybe even weeks.To start I had the battery tested, but they said the battery was fine Then the battery wouldn't start on a jump and I had the car towed back to my house since it was the weekend and then had it towed on that monday to the shop. After getting the car there, It then suddenly started up fine. They had a look at it and said they believed it to be the mass airflow sensor. Which they changed and the car seemed to be in good running order. About a week later it started doing it again. I took the car into Autozone where they ran tests on it and said that the battery, the alternator, and the starter were all fine on it but that it looked like it needed to have new terminals put on it. So we changed the terminals, along with the plugs and wires. Again, the car was working well for about a week before it died again. Once again I had to have it towed as it wouldn't jump from 3 different cars that we tried. When the tow truck driver got there, he was able to jump it b/c he had two batteries on his truck, but when he turned the engine back off, it instantly would die again. He towed the car back to the shop where they said that it was the alternator; which was then replaced. They said to be safe, I should probably get a new battery since it had been jumped so many times. I did not do that right away, but the car was running good and a week later the car died again and again would not start off of a jump. I went and bought a new battery... seemed to have solved the problem.... I ran it 2 more times that evening and then once again on my way to work the next morning.
The next day at work I came out to a car that again would not start. It won't take a jump, but does get enough power when hooked up to the cables that the interior lights come on.....
Any answers!?!

Yup! .... If you lived in the rust belt the answer would be quite apparent...I strongly suspect that you have a couple really crappy ground wires!...Cure #1 , get an 18" battery cable with the bolt fittings on each end...bolt to block on passenger side useing any accessible bolt on engine, and on the inner fender as well ... be sure to remove the paint around the bolt hole for good connectivity. Cure #2, there
are 2 wires going to the starter, A hot and a ground. the hot should have a good , clean connector and solid insulation (it gets burned sometimes) If not , crop back and solder splice some new wire /connector. Mechanical splices here are not acceptable. The ground wire needs to be cropped back a few inches, and a new connector applied as well. you can remove some insulation , and considering the age , youll have at least 3" of corroded wire there.. The Idea here is to remove/. minimize the corrosion, which is causing resistance here. A final cure #3, would be to replace the starter, if all else fails, and then I recommend a new Hitachi mini starter, as its only a few bucks more, has a higher tork output, and is 15 times better than any rebuilt you can buy (its the labor/ effort to remove and install the bugger thats the killer)...In any event , good luck, and let us know how things work out
