Ford Torino Most Torinos were conventional cars, and generally the most popular models were the 4-door sedans and 4-door hardtops. However, Ford produced some high performance versions of the Torino by fitting them with large powerful engines, such as the 428 CID and 429 CID "Cobra-Jet" engines. These cars are classified as muscle cars.

Exclamation decode vin

hello i am new to this and looking for help. i am in the process of purchasing a 1970 torino. i was told that it has a 429cj motor in it. owner is not sure if it is a matching numbers car or not. the vin # is # OM34M206874
i was told that according to this vin it is a 351c 4v. can some one verfy this for me please.
also what is a fair price for this car if it is a true cj car?
waht is a fair price if it is a cj clone?
the car appears to be in solid no rust condition. not 100% original, has after market parts on motor and interior parts, wheels etc.... i would rate it a about a 6 out of 10. no major repairs needed running and driveable. lookes like it was used for drag racing at some point.

thanks
dave....

I thought the 427 was discontinued by 1970, the 429 was available. I wouldn't doubt though if i had it wrong,

Does the car have a 351 cleveand 4v? if so thats cool, im a huge fan of those motors!

Yeah D is for the decade, C=60's D=70's E=80's F=90's

0 is for the year

Hence this part was engineered in 1970

V is the application, S is for "Sedans/fullsize" T for trucks, Z is usually for performance, their is a whole bunch of possiblilties though

E is for the part type, E for engine

on heads i rarely see four more charachers after that, but on other parts you almost always will, they are bigger parts of the part number

I know just a little bit on engineering numbers, but usually its enough to help and date parts, put a search in google and you should find alot more on it.

Default fair price

what would you think would be a fair price for a cj clone..
what it supposed to have in it: 429cj, c6 auto, all visual cj parts dash pad, seats, grill, decals, rear window louvers.
he is asking $9500.00

9500 sounds like a fair enough price if you can drive it off the lot and its a true 429 cj........

you want head casting numbers like:

D0VE-C
C8SV-B
C8VE-E

Other than that your relying on his good word. If someone put a 460 with the cobra jet heads in there its not the end of the world. If someone put a 460 with plain jane 460 heads, then your getting about half the motor. If they left the car with the original 429 your in great shape. Check to see if its a dual point distributor will give you some idea, but not all. If its a dual point id almost bet its a 429 or they went to the work to switch it over. If its a single point it could go both ways.

I'd reccomend getting a better look at the car before you commit to it. Either take it to a mechanic and see what it will take to make it run, or ask if you yourself and can figure out why its not running.
