Fuel Tank/1968 Torino

Just obtained a 1968 Torino GT formal roof (not fastback) . I have the engine started, tranny will drop into gear. What I DESPERATELY need is a doggone gas tank. Where is the best place to find one? I am restoring a 1968 Mustang, too, and those parts are virtually simple to locate. I realize there is a huge difference in finding parts for Mustangs vs. Torino's but is it THAT difficult to find a tank for the '68 Torino / Fairlane for less than $300. I was successful in finding one for $189 but it comes with NOTHING. Pls help if you can. Thanks!

$189 for the tank doesn't sound unreasonable. I don't think you've intruded upon any rules.

I as well am new at the forum thing, but I have a similar issue. I have located 2 gas tanks "used" one in ST Louis, mo for $50 and another good used in milwaukee, wi for $100 contact me for phone numbers/emails.

Now for the reason for the post, I have a great gas tank but the fuel neck tube was cut off. I am looking for a bad tank so I can remove the gas filler neck for my current tank. Any out there?

wow. pacdaddy i also have the exact same probelm with almost the same car (except mine is a 69 formal roof) i plan on just buying a new one (for 250$) from Dearborn classics cause i dont trust a "used" gas tank haha.

My strong suggestion is to get a new gas tank. You dont know whats in the old one or whether it is solid or leaky. A water tank is one thing, if it leaks the grass gets greener. If the gas tank leaks, you have bigger problems. Spend the extra $100 and be safe.

I also just purchased a #'s matching R code 69 Cobra Torino hardtop (I posted in the Fairlane section yesterday - see I must be new!). It is running great, auto transmission works, gas tank works, body repainted, but for one big issue - completely rusted out floor, lower rad supports are pretty much toast (actually more like swiss cheese), rear frame rails are ok but fronts are not and cross members are iffy at best.

It's easy to find floor pans and rear suspension assembly / frame rails, but its damn near impossible to find rad supports and front sub-assembly and frame rails for a 69, or any Torino for that matter. I've looked at all the major catalogue guys and suspension guys (Heidt, Fatman, Mac's, Dearborn, etc.) If it was a Mustang - no problem, but man o man, I will probably have to fabricate them or find a roller without rust??? Any ideas

wow thats harsh. did you know about the rust before you bought it and it turned out to be worst afterwards or did you not see it at all? my suggestion would be to try and find a Ranchero parts car and see if the parts match up. How much did you pay for the Cobra?

Depending on where you are I have an old tank that is rusted out if all you want is the neck. Also you may look at same year mid size mercs for you other parts. Again depending on where you're at I have some of the parts still on a sedan. Or you can try allammericanclassics.com in Oregon or desert valley auto parts in Arizona. I got my bits from all american and they were in good shape and reasonably priced. Another idea if you have a mustang available you may measure your front end parts and see how close they are you may get away with it.

Does anyone know if the orignal gas tank on a torino was 16 gallons or 20 gallon? Dearborn has 16 gallon tanks but everywhere else has 20 and im not sure how i could identify myself.

a gallon is 231 cubic inches, you could try measuring the tank and figuring out how many cubic inches, then how many gallons it is.
