Ford WindstarIntroduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.
I just wanted to make this thread in order to give all of you a place to state what has went wrong with your Windstar. This isn't here to bash the Windstar, it is here so that people know what to look for when they purchase a used Windstar or have a Windstar that is starting to give them problems.
i'm at 141,000 miles right now.
i've had to have the trans rebuilt, replaced the upper and lower intake gaskets, gone through three alternators, two belt tensioners, aside from all the normal maintenance that comes with any high mileage vehicle. i've also had problems with the door sensors, mostly with the side door and some with the back hatch.
...My windstar's been really good until Monday Afternoon, In fact this past week, it was running better than ever untill I shut it off Monday Afternoon. I discovered the blown head gasket shortly after I let it cool down.
Before that it was great, only replacing a few major things:
ABS sensors (2)
Alternator
Power Steering Pump
Brake pads/shoes, calipers, and front rotors
Rear Shocks and Springs
Front Shocks
Front Springs (waranteed Recall)
Transmission at ~112,000 miles

Bought a 2002 cargo in May with 136K miles. At 142K, the tranny died without warning, leaving me stranded 1,500 miles from home. Instead of paying $2K for a rebuilt tranny and installation, I bought a '99 LX with 136K miles and just 6K on the tranny, which seems to be the big failure of these beasts.
Right now, the '99 is throwing LEAN fault codes, both banks, when warming up. It performed flawlessly over 3,000 miles in the last two weeks.
