98 windstar thumping noise when you put in reverse

This just started , you go to the garage start the van, put in reverse you hear this thump coming from underneath the van. It doesn't do it everytime, I'd say once every ten times. I checked trans fluid, look good, inspected underneath, I don't see anything(mind you it 20 below outside). Any ideas?

does it sound like exhaust is rattling, check make sure its all clear from ice and snow. also check the heat shields around the exhaust.

No rattling, just thumping, could it be mounts?

Rear brakes, go check them. Mine did this cause I had a broken spring in the rear Brake assembly.

I haven't had a chance to look where is coming from, Have you had your windstar looked at.

It kinda sounds like a worn motor mount. I've had other vehicles (but not experienced this on my Windstar) that would thump when put into reverse and it was a worn motor mount allowing the engine to torque. Pop the hood and have somebody watch the engine while you hold the brake and put it in reverse to see if the engine moves and clunks.

I'd follow Dougl and Mark V, obviously Doug's advice is easier to check out at first, but checking your brakes is never a bad thing. If it's intermittent I tend to go with Mark's advice, but check both theories and write back!
