Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

I finally finished putting this 3.8 back together. It was not a quick Job - About 18 hours total in my spare time. I didn't have to buy any special tools. I left the fuel rail attached and hung it up out of the way and removed the power steering pump with the head so I didn't need to pull the pully.

thats pretty good... I know my attempt was about 18 hours worth of work, and I boned up the $30 for a pulley puller.... I ended up having a new engine put in anyway.

Why would an engine stall while coming down a hill in 1st gear (engine braking)???

Hi. I had the same problem and my mechanic said to try putting a sealant in first (only $8 to lose) sometime when I going on a good run. Like he said, we always have the option of tearing it down.I did and he used a high quality sealant and I drove 1.5 hrs non stop on the open highwayand it worked. No issues yet after 8000 kms on since I did this.

I went through a similar scenario with my son-in-law a couple of years ago on a Chevy product. Bad head gasket. Pumped a lot of coolant while driving home from college. Would not start once it was shut off (not unusual).

He had the head gaskets replaced (not by me), but wound up with a rod/main bearing less than 6 months later.

I talked to a "pro" and he said that was not unusual. About 50% of engines that get coolant in the oil from a bad head gasket will have a bearing failure within a year or so.

I agree 100% with this. If you get coolant in the oil you will have bearing failure because the coolant would not let the oil lubricate the bearings, the more coolant the more damage it creates.

If you dont have bearing failure you will have an engine that will fail faster than it would have if you didnt have the coolant issue.

I don't know if it would help but before I put this one of mine back in operation after putting in the gaskets I ran some flush through it. There is no water in the cylinders now.
Now I have one bad injector in it that I have ordered and should be able to install on Saturday.
