Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

I am assuming front A/C is cooling fine. For the rear, it may well be due to low refrigerant. Have the system checked, serviced and recharged. Other causes are clogged rear evaporator core filter or the probelm with the core itself.

Is there any switch under the chasis to switch the air from hot to cold on the rear a/c - I lost my vacumn totaly up front with the A/C controls. 1st the back went out got stuck on hot and blowing on the floor.

Then the front got stuck on defrost but I was able to control the temp - I located the vacumn motor for that and just unhooked the rod and the door opened to the front vents so now cold there.

But I can't get the rear back to cold, it blows hot - seems to be plenty of freon - the front blows ice cold now.

Let me know

Thanks

Russ

Unhook the rod (from the lever) of the rear vacuum control motor also; that should make it switch to cold air.

I took the panel off and did that and it did flip to vent from the floor however it is still blowing hot - I crawled underneath below the area where the a/c-heat lines run from the front and there is another vacumn valve with 2 lines running in one side and two out - there is no lever - just an internal valve of course with no vacumn not working.

Is there anyway to override this? I think it has the freon cut off and allows the hot water to flow to the heater coil in the sidewall - this why still blowing hot thru the vents.

Let me know

Thanks

Russ, do this: start your car, turn both front and rear A/Cs on, run them for a few minutes to allow freon to reach the rear lines. Apply emergency brake & block four wheels. Now crawl under the car (like you did before) and feel the metallic A/C lines; one of these is the return line and is supposed to be hot, so just barely/quickly touch 'em with your finger to identify which one is cold. Hold the cold line; if it is quite cold to touch, it means freon is reaching here. My guess is that the other line (supposed to be very hot) should not be hot in your van and it would mean freon is not going thru the evaporator, i.e., a block in the evap core filter or core itself. Do this test and post back. Good luck.

I am glad I found this forum as well. I also am having this same problem with the rear air, BUT I am having trouble with the front air coming through the defroster as well. We got this repaired a little over a year ago. But the problem returned. The guy that "fixed" it said the part he gave me must have malfunctioned again, but it was no longer under warranty. Anyway, my cousin, who I should have carried it to in the first place, checked under the dash and didn't seem to find any vacuum leaks, so maybe it is the part again. Any suggestions?

russ1960,

I'm having heat come out my rear vents as well. Let me know of your success, as I am having the same/similar issue. Thanks in advance.

Wild child,
Replace the part, especially if that is what your cousin thinks you should do.

Longshark,
Try the recommendations made in this thread and let everyone know of your results,

I am having exactly the same problems (rear floor blowing warm, nothing from rear top vents and front blowing nice and icy but only through the defrost vent). Do you know what part was replaced to make the front work again?

Thanks for all the great info for the rear. I'm going to look at that tomorrow and see if we can at least get some cold air blowing in the rear.

Thank you for all the posts. I just discovered that the problem was in the rear fan switch under the radio. I was able to unplug what I first thought was a two-wire cable from the back of the switch. I realized quickly these "wires" were vacuum lines. With the aid of a vacuum gauge I discovered that the white colored line was responsible for activating the rear a/c and shifting the air into the upper ceiling and side vents. Now I got the thing jimmy-rigged until I am able to order a part. My kids will now be cool through the summer.

Thanks again.
