Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

There is a vacuum actuated solinoid that moves a plenum to select between heat and a/c in the driver's side ductwork behind the seat.

Default windstar 98 rear A/C problem

Thanks for the info on rearA/C problem. Can the solenoid be replaced by an amateur? or does it require a mechanic?

You should be able to do it yourself,I believe its an electronic blend door motor though.

I've been wrong before, It might be electrical, but whether it is electrical or vacuum, one would need to gain access to it by removing stuff from the inside of the vehicle. Locate the gadget that moves a little lever that moves the plenum/door, and correct the connections to it, or replace it.
I agree... an amature should be able to do it.

Rear blend door is driven by a vacuum actuated motor; and usually the lever that this motor moves breaks. This can be secured back to the motor with a wire.

Here are two actual photos of the rear A/C unit.
The first one is just a shot of the cover taken off.
The second is of the vacuum actuator that has vacuum applied to it. It pulls down on the little blue lever (it kinda looks white) and that changes the direction of the air from the floor to the roof.
When there is not vacuum, or the actuator is broken it will stay in the heat mode and direct it to the floor.

I was so glad to see this thread. Having the exact same problem in our 98. I just went out removed the panel. Don't have great access cause I can't take the seat out right now.. But I was still able to push down the blue lever and get it to switch over, over course it popped right back up, but at least it's blowing cool air out of the vents instead of burning hot air. I'll have to look at it closer perhaps this weekend if I get a chance to take the seats out.
