Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

Default 2000 Sel blowing fuses for radion/ cig lighter

Hello everyone,

I just recently bought our first minivan, a 2k Sel with only 59k miles. The dealer told me there was a problem with the radio, but if they fixed it they would have to charge me ( they had just gotten it in and hadn't looked at it.) So after a few blown fuses I have discovered that the radio fuse and the one below it blow as soon as I put a new fuse in. I am getting ready to take the radio out now and hook it up to my battery with some wire to see if it works, and go from there.

Any suggestions or comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

PS. I don't know if it matters, but it is a fm/ tape/ CD radio with the axillary jacks for the 2nd row.

I think you are going about it logically... but use an inline fuse between your battery and the unit when you test it, else you could make matters worse for the unit.

BY your method, you will differenciate between a short in the unit, or one in the van.

You don't need to test the radio: just remove it and replace the fuse.

BTW, I have the radio/tape out of my '02, free for cost of packing & shipping. Bought a unit with CD. It should fit all '99-03, and I have pic of the rear connector.

thanks for the help guys. I pulled the radio out and dc'd the lighter. When I changed the fuse it didnt blow then I put the radio back in and it works. Must be a short in the lighter.

If you just bought the van and it had problems right when you bought it the Dealer should be fixing it. I am sure they found a bigger issue and sold it like that so the new buyer could pay to have it fixed.

They tried to do this when we bought our 98 Explorer. They said it was perfectly fine when we bought it but we made them fix it for free because the Safety Checklist that came with the vehicle said no issues but it was clearly never looked at.
