Ford WindstarIntroduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.
Has anyone ever experienced a cracked rear axle on a 2000 ford windstar sel?
I discovered the defect just prior to a long road trip. Ford was very generic in there reply to this defect and I was just wondering if others are being notified or warned of this very dangerous and poor design. There was no known event that could have created this crack. The replacement cost was $800.00, claimed on my insurance. Maybe if insurance companies start seeing multiple claims, then Ford might accept responsibility for this deficeincy. The van has 85,00 miles, garage kept and in good condition (no rust), secondary vehicle.

Reason: additional info
That's incredible. I can't imagine building such a vital part as an axle that would break in normal service. And for Autozone to have them, means it's not unusual. Shame on Ford.
Looks like a defect when it was originally made and it is not Fords fault all the time, most big stuff like this Ford and other Automobile Companies buy from another company.
Man you guys are brutal every time something goes wrong and always say it is Ford to blame.

If your Exhaust tip is bigger than your cylinder bore, you are a Ricer!
It's Ford's name on the car. Ford is reponsible for all specifications. Inadequate specifications or inadequate inspections of incoming parts are Ford responsibility. When you buy a new Ford, your contract is with Ford, not all their subcontractors.

Ford ads touting their use of vanadium steel in the Model T showed a front axle tied in a knot without breaking. They have come a long way down since then.
Items critical to safety must be designed not to fail in several lifetimes of the longest lived product.
I'm going to inspect the rear axle on our '02 right away.
I am not a very spiritual person, but I've been telling friends it was divine intervention that caused me to do a pre-road trip check that morning. I notified Ford, Insurance company, and Highway safety. Hopefully, another family (it is a family vehicle) will be spared a tragedy.
