Ford WindstarIntroduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.
Hello all! This is my first post here. A buddy of mine has a 1999 Windstar that the tranny went out on. I am in the process of removing it, I just had a couple of questions for people that might have done this removal before.....
I see that the subframe has to be dropped, but can the transmission slide off of the engine without having to lower down the transmission also?
It looks like there isn't enough room between the side of the transmission and the frame for it to slide off of the motor.
I'm thinking that the engine/transmission need to be lowered with the front subframe in order to remove the transmission from the engine.
The subframe must be lowered. I don't know the details too much, but I believe you have to disconnect the half-shafts and electrical harnesses, maybe even a few suspension components... then unbolt and slowly lower the subframe.

Besides what Flyingjackal456 said to your post. the engine does not come down with the tranny, you need to support the engine from above with an engine hoist prior to starting to remove any tranny, or sub-frame bolts. You also need to remove your drive axles.
hope this helps.
It is probably a lot better to drop the engine with the tranny... That flexplate is a pain in the arse to get it to seat right. I'd recommend dropping both. While you have the engine out, do your plugs and wires.
