Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

Hi BL18400
I see your post is from August. I, too just had a similar situation yesterday. I was driving my big boy to work and I lost 3rd and 4th gear. We felt a jerk and notice we weren't going anywhere, just running my rpm's.
I ended up having to drive her home at 22-25 mph.
Were you able to rectify your problem or did you just get rid of the vehicle?
I actually thought it was the tranny. But, I guess, I will start with the gear box!

Default Windstar 1998

Regarding gearbox problem. The problem with the gearbox when i lost 3. and 4. gear, was the electric switch on the top of the gearbox. I did a compleet electronic analysis of the gearbox in the shop, and they installed a new switch for me. Hopefully you have the same problem, and probably you can replace the switch your self. This part is not expencive. Best wishes from Oslo, Norway.

Question Is this a common problem?

My wife recently bought an Windstar -98, and a couple of weeks later when she was traveling on the highway the gear suddenly shifted to 2nd and the rpm increased to around 4000.
The car was towed to an Ford Workshop, and they did an full electronic test, but couldn't find anything wrong. Also during their testdrive, everything seemed normal. 1 hour later on the highway again, the car did the same thing again, shifted to 2nd gear and increased the rpm to 4000.

It seems to me like this is the same problem.

Is there anybody else out there who had the same experience??
Is this a common problem with this car??
