No bolt has to be loosened unless replacing the whole unit.

It's a Torx bolt on my 1996's tensioner pulley. You can use a small mirror to visualize the bolt.

I have seen my Ford mechanic use a Torx bit (sorry, I don't remember the size) attached to a ratchet to loosen[?] the bolt and undo the belt.

I think this would be safer than risking losing a finger or two.

Thanks for the responses too. Sorry it took so long to acknowledge the replies. I will check it out and decide on the tool availability at the local autozone. Actually there are two autozones in town and between them I should be able to borrow it.

the bolt that holds the pulley to the tensioner on my fords is a 15mm. i took an extra 3/8 drive 15mm socket i had and welded it to a long thin piece of flat stock and made my own "tool"
