Ford WindstarIntroduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.
Everytime I go to fill the tank without fail I have to crank the engine a couple of times before it sputters to life. I'm guessing charcoal cannister? I can't find any similar problems in other fords. Anyone else know how to troubleshoot this problem as efficiently as possible?
I am guessing you keep filling it after it clicks off because you want the tank to be full up to the gas cap, correct?
If you are doing this that is your problem.
That's really cool to know! Do you know why that happens? Is it that fuel gets backed up into the vapor recovery system?

You are overfilling the fuel system when you keep filling it up click after click after click. The fuel has no where to go except for places it isnt supposed to go.
Some vehicles seem to not like this. I just round it off to the Dollar when I fill up after the first click.
Nope. When gas was $4.00+ I was just putting in 20-40 bucks at a time and it would still do it. I never go after the auto shut off, it isn't safe. I think my charcoal cannister is toast and is flooding the engine because when I take off the gas cap there is that sucking sound.

More likely it is the valve that controls purging of the the canister !

Here is a picture of the EVAP purge valve...
and as my grandson would say... Oh happy day!
It is in the center of the engine compartment all the way up against the firewall.
It'll be real easy to get to, once you remove the windshield wiper assembly and the black plastic cowel. EvapCannisterPurgeValve.jpg
