Update:
Ok....I got the van back together so my wife can drive it for now. It still has trouble making up its mind between overdrive and 4th during mild acceleration on slope, but otherwise it runs like new. I did the "learn trim" steps in my owner's manual and then drove it for at least 10 miles like it said. It did the "over/4th/over/4th" thing but no where near as bad. Maybe the tran is not happy. It has good tran fluid level. I have not done the explosive vacuum check yet, I will try that next weekend. I cleared the codes before the test run and checked them after. The only code right now is a "lean bank 2" code. If ya'll have more knowledge I will try it out, otherwise we can close this thread and I'll open a new one if needed. Thank you for everyone's help.
Funny story / learning curve:
I took my tester and checked all the things I could (per the Chilton's manual) with reference to intake / exhaust doohickies. I took off the egr valve and it looked ok. I didn't have a vacuum tester so I used myself. The egr valve moved freely and had no problem holding a vacuum. I checked tps harness voltage and tps variable resistance and it checked out ok. I checked egr vacuum regulator voltage and resistance and it checked out ok. I checked out dpfe voltage and it checked ok. Funny part - I tried to check voltage on harness for mass air flow. Zzzzzzttt. I touched the hot pole on the maf harness and some other pole at the same time and blew a 15 amp ignition fuse and a 50 amp radiator fan thingy fuse. Sigh.... So I went down to O'Reilly and they had fuses I needed. I replaced fuses and van acted really wierd. Turns out my battery had pretty much discharged in all the confusion (probably because I tried starting and drained it after 3 or 4 times). I jumped it off and now everything is great with exception of stuff mentioned above.
