Changing from dino oil to full synthetic will not harm the engine. I would recommend getting an engine flush done before pouring in the synthetic. This will help get rid of any dino residue/sludge build up. Synthetics run a tad cooler and since the oil has better flow characteristics you might even gain a few HP at the dyno. I recommend amsoil oil or royal purple. They are the best in the synthetic oil industry. I currently run Quaker State 4x4 synthetic blend - in my lawnmower! 6.5hp tecumseh, 6 years old with over 150hours and looks and runs like new. I've never had to add oil. I run QS 4x4 in my taurus as well, just until I run out of it (sold the gas station and kept a few cases for myself!). Once it runs out I'll purchase amsoil 5W20.
The main benefit for changing to synthetics are the extended drain intervals. If you're always on the go, drive lots of miles and always push your oil drain intervals to the limit then it'd be the way to go. Depending on the oil and filter combination you can go up to 25 000kms before draining the oil. I wouldn't recommend waiting that long, but I've drained oil after 6 000miles and my oil analysis stated I had 38% oil life remaining! You get what you pay for.
