Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

Default Odometer and Speedometer Not working-99 Windstar

I am having a problem with my odometer and speedometer gauges not working. I have checked my fuses, put in a new #10 fuse, but yet it still does not work. Am I replacing the right fuse? The owner's manual wasn't too clear on which fuse works those gauges. Please help????

There is no simple answer for us folks outside the group of Ford electrical designers. That is a close-knit society ... who don't want us to know very much. I'll share what I THINK.

I would take a voltmeter and check the tops of all fuses in both boxes ... at the battery and inside the cabin near driver's left foot. You may or may not find any problem with fuses.

The "output shaft speed sensor" on the tranny feeds info to the PCM. The PCM communicates directly with the speedometer/odometer thru the "twisted pair". (I think).

russcheri, my speedometer was only reading half speed and the cruise was not working either. I replaced the speed sensor on the tranny and the brake pressure switch under master cylinder, neither solved the problem. It ended up being a bad abs wheel sensor on the drivers side.

I have a VSS, (Vehicle Speed Sensor) fault code. I hear its not that hard to replace but I cant seem to find it on the tranny. Does anyone know its location? My speedometer is off as much as 10 mph at 60 mph. It reads slow. Cruise Control is not working and when I slow down for a red light the trans shifts down and then back up in a jerking motion.

Are these problems that a bad VSS would cause? Thanx

Thanks to BroncoJoe19 for the tranny pix. I don't know if my 3.8 has the same tranny as in your pix, but I'll look to see if the vss is as shown in the pix. Do you know how to determine what tranny one has?
