Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

Default Fuel Smell

I have a 2001 Windstar recently there is a bad fuel smell after running hard,
usually up the mountain, today after a fill up it was bad just cruising around
on the flats?

Any Ideas?

The shop manual gives no diag. for this condition.

You may have a fuel leak under the hood. While driving hard, the engine box temperature goes up ... and the rad fans are likely on "high" ... both could tend to stir the smell about. It will not take a large leak ...

Happy hunting!

I can pursue that angle but after stopping the smell is very strong around the filler area.

Then I would suspect the EVAP system ... the canister is in the rear.

Where n the rear? I have a FORD set of manuals but that is not in the fuel system section.
It must be in the Emissions book which I don't have in my set.

If you have the body section, it should show it. I don't remember exactly, but it is near/in one of the rear wheel wells ... kinda near the tank. ... at least, it is on my '99.

I got a 2004 Ford Powertrain Control / Emissions Diagnosis for Gas Engines book off ebay for cheap. It covers the minivans, of course.

Do you have the odor inside while running, or only after shutdown?

The odor is inside slightly and worse when the rear windows are open and vehicle is being driven.

I just had that same issue fixed on the wifey's car. It was really bad gas smell outside the cabin and around the filler area. Turns out it was a bad gasket where the filler hose connects to the gas tank. They dropped the fuel tank and replaced the filler hose and gasket. Now it is good as new. It was covered under the power train warranty so no cost to me!!
