Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

Question 1998 Ford Windstar transmission problem

Hi There,

It just happened to my 1998 3.8L Windstar last week. The transmission works fine with engine starting cold. But after driving on hwy for half an hour or so, transmission starts to shift down and up on its own. It will come and go for a few mins. When I bring the van to fully stop and start over again, transmission won't shift to higher gear when I accelerate.

Help!

Sounds like electronic controls and not mechanical.

Sounds like rebuild time to me. FYI mine was $1984 for a full rebuild.

I had transmission fluid changed and replaced all O2 sensors.
