Ford WindstarIntroduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.
Does this apply to a 1998 Windstar cargo van 3.0 with NO cruise control? It's a basic model with no options - not even air conditioning or power windows/locks.
Copious, your particular Windstar may not be included. You can determine by looking for the pressure switch mounted to the bottom of the brake master cylinder. Ford can also verify by your VIN number, I am sure.
ABS was not included on all Windstars ... it was an option on my '99. (IIRC)
Thanks, I'll get a Ford dealer to run the VIN and see if it's included in the recall. My guess is that it isn't. And I want to check if mine has ABS. I'm sure after I've had it for a while, I'll get to know it really well.
Mark V, you may be right about the ABS being on all Windstars. I took a look at the original window sticker for my '99 SEL (always good to keep up with these things) and it shows the ABS to be included in the base (SEL?) price.
However, I did pay for the trac-control as an add-on option.
Well, we just picked ours up from the dealership having the cruise deactivation switch/brake/wiring harness replaced. So far, no Brake! light!!! I'm not sure it that's permanent, but 9 times out of 10, it would have come on... so this is a good sign! Also, they said that there was a rear seat latch recall as well on the van, but the part had to be ordered, so i have to take it back when it gets here. The repair didn't take long at all...

well, we called Ford about it, and immediately called the dealership. i think most customers will receive something in the mail at the end of the month.
My van IS included in the recall. I thought because it didn't have cruise control it might not be in the recall. And it seems I may have ABS after all... there's an ABS light on the dash that comes on momentarily when I start the engine.
I only found about the recall because I imported the van from the USA (Miami, Florida) to Canada (Montreal, Quebec). Part of the importation and registration process involves getting a letter from a Ford dealer or the Ford Motor Company stating there are no outstanding recalls. When I asked for the letter, I was told there's a recall on my van!
So, I have an appointment next Tuesday to get the repair done for free, but will have to pay $20 for the letter... (could have been worse - a Ford dealer closer to me charges $75 for the letter). I just want to get the letter so I can get the van registered before my temporary permit expires.
And it will be nice to know I won't have to worry about any of those horror stories related to this problem.
