Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

Unhappy Windstar Brake Recall 1995 2003

So, I've talked to Ford, and we have determined that my Windstar IS included in this recall. My only concern is that I have had a "Brake" light issue since buying the van, and was told that it was just the sensor. After reading online, i am seeing that this could actually be related to the recall. Now, i'm kinda afraid to even keep the thing in my driveway!!! Could the Brake light thing just be a sensor, or is it more likely to be the switch/leaking fluid/fire hazard issue? Thanks

I do believe it is all the same switch ... used for the brake lights and for turning off the speed control. It can fail "twice" ... once electrically, and once as a hydraulic leaker ... causing other damage/fires as the fluid drips onto wiring below.

Keeping it in the driveway is little risk ... but keeping it in the attached garage ... that's a different matter.

Unplug the harness from the switch, everything works, except the cruise control.
I found an online parts store (RockAuto.com) that had the switch with harness for around $15....It also had the safety link attached. As far as I know the Windstar is not included in the recall.

The brake light switch and the cruise control deativation switch(recall)are 2 seperate switches.Definately go by your local dealership and have the recall taken care of.
The brake lamp switch is the plunge type and can be readjusted by removing the switch(down by the brake pedal on a bracket) and exteding the plunger.reinstall with the brake pedal depressed.Release the brake pedal and the switch will readjust.

well, it's in my garage now, however, later today, it will NOT be. my brake light just comes on intermittently... it comes on sometimes at startup, but sometimes i have to drive it a bit before it comes on... but 98% of the time, it comes on one way or another... should i check to see if the hydraulic fluid is leaking? where would i look for that?

Ok my bad there is a float switch in the master cylinder that sticks also seperate from the cruise control. It will turn the red brake lamp on in your dash if it sticks or brake fluid is low.Check your fluid level and the stick your figer in the resevoir and work the float up and down.

MY BAD ALSO! Yes, the master cyl pressure switch feeds the cruise control and the anti-lock. The brake pedal switch feeds the rear brake lamps and the tow control module.

(There's nothing better than getting old!)
