Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

Default 95 Ford Winstar Tranny

We knew it was coming, but had hoped to make it last till tax refund time... so much for that!

Today the transmission went out, won't go above 2nd gear, came home going 20 mph, thank goodness I live in a rural area!

My question is, when calling junk yards is there a different vehicle type transmission that will fit mine? Say like a Chevy Aerostar's tranny? From looking at different websites it seems that the 95 Winstars are big on transmission problems, and I'm afraid of putting in a transmission that is just as bad as the one we are removing.

When we first got it, it would have trouble when it was cold going from first to second gear, but then when the weather got warm, it was fine. Once in a while it would slip, but nothing major. The last 2 weeks its been slipping alot more, and occasionally the o/d light on the gearshift would start flashing. The right amount of fluid is in it, and hubby changed the fluid and filter on it in march or april, and added a stop slip that they sell. (he works at Napa) If he tries this again, would it help, or are we just stuck with putting in a new tranny? I'd absolutely love to just slap a band aid on it till Febuary!

We have a guy willing to put it in for us, it's just we don't want to waste his time or our money putting in a bad tranny. Also, the fluid also now has a burnt smell to it. Any and all ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Also, the engine runs fine, has 114,000 miles on it, body in pretty good shape, so it's worth it to us to fix. And how's this for irony, I was on my way home from the BMV, i was renewing the tags for it!

Thank you!!

I am going through the same problem with my 1995 Windstar. I replaced the transmission (no easy job) and still have the same problem of it not going into second. Am now told that the computer is bad. Also was told that if you bring it to the ford garage they can hook it up via internet and reprogram the computer and make the tranny work if it is fact the computer.

You may also want to look into the fact that all the transmissions up till and including 2000 Windstar were buggy and prone to problems. Starting in 2001 I believe they used a new type transmission. I would check and see if you can fit a 2001 or newer tranny in your truck.

NO A CHEVY TRANNY WILL NOT WORK ON A WINDSTAR!

You will have to use the type of Transmission the Windstar came with.
