Ford WindstarIntroduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.
I have a 2000 Windstar (3.8L). A few weeks ago, the Check Engine Light came on, so I took it to a dealer and got the 171/174 code. He reset it and told me I may need to replace my HEGOs if it comes on again. I then found this site and saw that it might not actually be the problem, so I was going to take the info to him after Christmas since the light did come on again a couple days ago.
Then today, I start the car and get my ABS light on, the odometer is all dashes, and it seems my air-conditioning will only blow hot air!! What in the world does all this mean?!? There is fluid in the master cylinder, so that's not the problem. Not that it would make sense anyway.
One last problem is that I'm in the military stationed in England with this car, with a British Ford dealer that knows very little about big 'ol American vans. If anybody has any pointers, it will help out me and the mechanic both, I'm sure!
OK, so I just noticed that the speedometer doesn't seem to work either. I guess it's a speed sensor problem. The a/c and CEL must be unassociated, but expensive problems. What a great way to usher in the New Year...
The master brake cylinder has a small leak that over time corrupted the brake pressure switch that sits right below the brake master cylinder. We replaced this part with the redesigned switch (SW-6351 XW7Z-9F924-BA Brake Repair Kit) and so far the fuse has not blown. This part cost about $25.00 through the Ford dealer
It turns out that a fuse had blown which controlled the ABS, speedometer, odometer, and the temp control. I replaced it about a week ago, but it blew again today. Any ideas what might cause the fuse to blow?
when the master cylynder leaks as it ages it short out the "brake pressure swith" which i believe it is located on the power brake booster
From one of my earlier posts:

Short at the cruise control servo (under the intake air filter) due to brake fluid leakage from the cruise control deactivation switch. Replace switch, add pig tail, replace cruise servo maybe the connector and fuse. Good luck!!!
Check the fuses (possibly fuse 10) If blown replace, if the fuse keep blowing, do what's in the quotes below...
