Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

Default 98 Windstar shifting

It does not happen all the time just once in a while.

It happens when it shifts from first into second I sometimes get a shudder or small shake in the shifting.

Like I said it doesnt happen all the time.

any suggestions on what it could be or what to do?

my 98 WS does that too when you accellerate to about 10-15mph and let off the gas

It does that.....it is actuallly normal

the gear ratio between 1st and 2nd is too far and it willl sometimes clunk around

I have the same situation with a 1999 Windstar. The shudder appears to happen if I hold the RPMs at 2500 on take-off. Mechanic says the transmission is fine. We'll see.

Yea the same thing happened to my 98 windstar and all of a sudden I was leaking transmission fluid and I went to Grease Monkey thinking I needed an oil change. Turns out I had an extremely bad leak. I took it to Ford but ran out on the way. So I had to pay 2000 for a rebuilt trans and that was at 86,656 miles. Go figure. Once in awhile it does it and it makes me nervous. Now I'm at 130,000 miles and everything appears to be alright with that.

So I wonder if this is really normal or not for us to experience?

Default Shudder Fixx

Go to a quality parts store or preferably a transmission parts store, if available, and ask for a tube of "Instant Shudder Fixx". It is made by Dr Tranny and comes in a red 2 fluid oz tube. It is a concentrated friction modifier with synthetics and synthetic esters and it is great for eliminating torque converter shudders instantly. Great Stuff!!

It works with all types of AT fluids, including synthetics.
