Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

Default '00 Transmission problem?

We have a 2000 Windstar and recently the "overdrive off" signal started flashing each time we got a mile or so down the road. After a few days the "check engine" light came on too, so we took it in. The shop did a transmission fluid flush as a first step and said to bring it back if that didn't fix it. Naturally, it didn't fix it.

My questions are:
Is the "overdrive off" signal actually related to this transmission problem, or is that something else?

If the van is running fine now, any idea on how long we can hold off before major problems?

Is it possible that there is a smaller transmission problem that should be addressed, or is it likely that we'll have to replace the whole transmission?

Thanks so much for any help!

Well I have a similar problem with my 99 Windstar, but it's very random. I took to to a Trans tech. Tehy stated that the O/D clutch plates are burned/burning up. It could possibly mean that your transmission is on the way out like mine.

I'm looking to problaby have to replace my transmission this year

I also had this problem with my 99 windstar with the blinking OD light, and it is related to the transmission, i also needed a new tranny but it was covered by warrenty. When you took your van in for servicing, they should have read the codes for the transmission, and you say your check engine light was on so you they should have told you what the problem was for the engine, did they tell you the check engine code? I believe when the OD light blinks the van goes into "limp" mode. Some people have fixed the problem by replacing their transmission range sensor aka neutral safety switch so i would change that first, i have not done it, but lots of people have and say it isnt hard to change at all. The TRS(Transmission Range Sensor) is a black part that sits on top of the transmission. I think I would get the tranny codes read first before doing anything. Lets let others chime in and see what they say? Hopefully you dont need a new tranny.

Our O/D light started flashing on a trip last year and we got new transmission.

The flashing OD light is a sign there is something seriously wrong with the transmission. There is a possibility it might be chipping apart.
