Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

Question Fuel Filter - Need Help

I have a 999 Windstar , the check eng. light came on & found the code for " TOO LEAN BANK ONE & TWO " .. I was told that since the injectors seem to be clean & eng. runs smooth , the Fuel Filter may need to be replaced . Has anyone replaced their own fuel filter located on the frame towards the rear of the van ??
It takes a special tool for the clips , where can you get the tool & how much ?
Do you need to drain the fuel tank to change the filter & how long does it take & hoiw much trouble ?

Trying to save approx. $ 50.00 to $ 75.00 to have it done . I figure I can buy the tool & save some money .
I appreciate any help .

These are the dreaded P0171 / P0174 codes. I doubt your fuel filter is the culprit. If you haven't already, check this forum for threads on this subject and problem. There are many as this is a very common problem. FYI - The 1999 and later 3.8L V6 engines develop vacuum leaks in the intake manifold which require replacement of the manifold isolator bolts. While this is likely your problem - carefully check your entire system of vacuum lines, hoses and fittings etc. for leaks. (I was able to fix the problem on my vehicle by replacing a $2 hose fitting.) Good Luck!

filter removal Tool if not attached to the gas pipe near the fuel filter, it cost 4 to 6 dlls, it is really easy to remove filter, you'll loose some gas the beggining with some pressure but it goes down fast.
