Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

Default Speedometer needle goes nuts

I have a 96 windstar and the speedometer needle fuctuates between 10% either way. So I am never sure how fast I am going, has anyone else had this problem and does anyone have a solution to fixing this. Or does anyone know what is causing this.
Advice will be much appreciated.

I would guess that you need a new speedometer cable. Never done this on a Windstar but it is a pain in the tail-feathers on GM cars...have fun.

About four years ago, I had the exact same problem in my 96 Windstar at 68,000mi. It cost me $700 to get it repaired: Sensor Assembly-E9TZ-9E732-A ($47), Speedo ay-les F68Z-17255-CB ($351), Ind Asy - Tran F58Z-7A110-A ($27) + Labor. I do have to say that it's worked fine since then and I now have 106,000mi. That's not to say that I would recommend having it done--the 96 Windstar is a bottomless money pit!

I have this same problem on my '95 Tracer, it's been flaky for about eight years (started around the time I got married). My dad had an early or mid-90s Taurus with the same problem. Have heard of others....I've never replaced the Tracer's. It's a five-speed, I just drive by the tach. Best estimate was $330+ for the speedo plus installation.
