Ford WindstarIntroduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.
My wife's nephew is a sales manager at the local Ford store. He knows that I'm a minivan fanatic. So he gave me a 2007 Freestar SEL to try out this weekend. Now I know that this is going to be like giving a drink to a recovering alcoholic, but I gave in to the temptation. I went by and picked it up this afternoon. So far it has been love at first sight, but will it last? Now I must say that I love the smell of new leather, and the power of that new 4.2 liter ain't too shabby either! This thing is loaded! Should I take it back tomorrow before I become addicted? It feels so good! I know when I take it back I'll be on stage at (Deal or No Deal). Do I keep what I have (95 Windstar SE) and quit and go home? I know it will not be that easy. Will I be ejected from all my forum buddies for crossing the line with this tempting delight? I hope not.
My wife ask what I was going to do, when I fell into a deep relationship with this beauty? She knows me! Will I ever forgive myself? Will riding in my old 95 ever be them same? Is now the time for remorse?
What do you think? Did I commit the unpardonable by accepting her nephew's generousity? Was there alterior motives in him being so kind, or is he just trying to be nice? Perhaps cruel?
Man what to do? I think I will try it, just this one time. I'm strong, I can handle it! Can I "Just Say NO"?
WOW - Huge mistake! The ability to be content with your old van has been compromised. 12 years is a big difference and based on your gushing you are falling out of love with your old van. Thoughts of taking the next step and plunking down the $$$ for the new van make bring you back to reality. Do you think your old van is feeling betrayed??? Good luck with your decision.
Nephew or not, all salesman want you to be thinking about buying what they are selling. I am suspicious about any salesmens generosity.
I'm here because I own a 1998 Windstar, and this forum has helped me keep it running and to address some of the many maintenence issues. (I have lots of miles on it, and it's still running.) If you look at my posts, you'll see I have learned here, and try to contribute back to the forum. BTW - I also own a Ford Bronco II, and before that, an F-150.
But I've owned other makes, particularly "Imports", and I generally have found them to be superior vehicles in design and construction to their U.S. counterparts. Especially Ford. Just my view. If you are paying attention, you'll notice that the U.S. consumer has much the same view, and Ford is in deep DEEP trouble.
Well I drove the Freestar all weekend. Went to Nashville and spent the weekend. I put about 650 miles on the baby. I must say it was very nice! The 4.2 was very impressive with good power and responce. The Freestar handles very well and rides like a luxury car. To put it quite simply "I loved it".
Now my old 95 Windstar is approching 245,000 miles and the tranny is now starting to slip under load. I've checked and it will take about $1700 for a factory rebuilt with warranty.
The way I figure I can replace the motor, which I don't need, and the tranny and still be a thousands of dollars ahead.
I loved the smell of new leather, but I can throw in a new scent tree to the rear view mirror and solve that little decrepancy.
My old Windstar SEL is long since paid for and it still looks good. Also I think the old style seats are more comfortable than the new ones. Also the dash in the old model Windstar is much more impressive.
Yeah, the Freestar goes back tomorrow. The Windstar still has a place in my heart. The legend lives on.
