Ford WindstarIntroduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.
This looks like a very helpful forum. I have had several issues come up in the last few years on my wife's Windstar. It is a 2000 LX with 95,000 miles.
1) About 2 years ago the ABS light started coming on after driving 5-15 minutes. The car dealer said it was a bad module and quoted a price of $575 plus labor. I didn't buy it, because why would it work for a few minutes and then not work? Based on the forum feedback, I should check the sensor. Has anyone been able to solve this problem?
2) The check engine light has come on and the cruise control is not working. These are minor compared to #3
3) The O/D light started flashing at highway speeds today. I took the car out and checked it myself. I haven't had a chance to get the code checked. The van seems to drive fine, but I am curious if this is a tranny major or just a filter issue. Any help here?
With 4 electrical issues, could this be an electrical system problem?
For issue number one, I'd just get the part and install it myself. Should check out fastfordparts.com for pricing on that control module.
Scan the check engine light and find out what it is. As far as cruise control, maybe it's a fuse only.
The O/D light came on my van. The transmission eventually lost its fourth gear and had to get the transmission rebuilt. May want to take it to a transmission shop so they can diagnose the problem properly.
Well, the blinking O/D scared me so I traded it in on a 2007 Freestyle. I got $2K back on my 2000 Windstar, 100 K miles, with a broken ABS module, a failing tranny, no cruise control, and the check engine on. I actually felt pretty good.
I wished I could have kept it another year, but I was happy that I never had to spend $.01 on unscheduled maintenance, just $160 on a new mirror after my wife hit a mail box.
The Freestlyle is a nice vehicle and a nice change from having vans for 10 years.
