Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

Default Windstar Transmission

I was told by one auto repair shop that I needed to flush the tranmission. I was told by another shop that they have had problems with transmissions in Fords going out after they flush them out. Does anyone know is it better to flush the transmission or not????

Flushing has it's pros and cons. You'll get mixed reviews here.

It is a good way to do a complete change on the tranny fluid, but this can bring up other issues. If the equiptment used to do the flush is not cleaned very well, you can introduce the last customers problems to your tranny. Also back flushing can loosen debis in your tranny and lodge in in a tiny valve or orfice.

I personally, am not a fan of the procedure, but I know many who are.

what ever you do use the OEM trans oil and part. I changed the oil with Castrol brand and burned my trans. Luckily it was still under extended warranty they changed the gear for free. best of luck

I have a 2003 Windstar and the transmission has been rebuilt once while under warranty. I am told that the transmission needs to be rebuilt again - actually the local Ford place told me it had a bad torque converter but that it would be better to rebuild it. I only have 66,000+ miles on the van. Is this typical and is there a recall on the transmission?
