Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

Default interior lights don't work when door is opened

I just picked up an 03 Windstar at an auction and have been fixing a few little things. I just noticed today that none of the interior lights come on when any of the doors are opened. I'v checked the position of the switches on the lights and ther in the middle. (On with door open, off when door closed) The van is an LX model and so has just the basics. MY thoughs are that the problem might be in the interior switch on the dash. Are there any relays that would be part of this system??
I sure would appreciate any input that would help. I just got it back from Ford where they fixed a broken sliding door latch and a frond wheel baring. I would like to avoid a big bill for what is probably an easy fix. thanks for your help

i had a problem with my '03 windstar not locking the doors with my keyless fob... While it was like that it wouldn't shut off interior lites or lock doors when exiting. I also had the door open signal on my dash cluster. Took too ford dealer and they replaced a switch according to them and works fine now. Also when havin the problem the interior lites wouldnt come on either after couple days. all is fine after switch was replaced.

Just a thought . . .
Windstars have a LOT of door sensor issues. In frustration at having a dead battery every morning (like me) due to battery drain from interior lights coming on at night when parked, the previous owner may have removed the interior light bulbs (like me). You might want to check to see if there are still bulbs in the interior light receptacles.

The simpler way to solve the door light problem is just to throughly clean all switches and or replace the bad ones. Cleaning has worked for me.

They are attached to the door latch/lock mechanism. I use brake cleaner to remove all the gunk and then used silicone spray lubricant to keep them lubricated. Any other lubricant will attract dust and get them sticky again, believe me I tried them all.

Did that also fix the doors locking when the van is put into Drive? I have an 03 Windstar and the dome lights don't come on, but the doors don't lock when the van is put into gear either. Please reply....

Yes. Loosen the door lock/latch mechanism and pull it out and you will see the little switch.
