Ford Windstar Introduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.

Default 95 windstar LX Will not shift.

You can drive it up to 20mph but it will not shift, goes in to reverse and drive just fine. Once you get going if you let off the gas and hit it again it just reves like its in N. . I checked the tranny fluid and it looks very clean. Van has only 120k. How do I diagnose the problem? Can I jump the wires like an OBD1 and hope it spits a code? OR do I need a scanner? What kind of scanner if so?
Does this sound common for them to do at 120k miles?

People on this forum will tell you that it's not uncommon for this tranny to have problems this early. As for me, I have 232K miles and the tranny is still shifting like a champ. *knocks on wood*

No I cant get it to shift other then from park to drive and reverse. Once I take off it accelerates like a bat out of hell and shows no problems. But when time comes to shift it doesn't happen.

well your tranny is stuck in 1st 90% chance it's gotta be rebuilt

...if you do decide to rebuild transmission, and other that the tranny, the thing is reliable, take it an Aamco and spend some coin for the rebuild and get the lifetime guarantee. I've got in on my 98 WS 245,000 miles and my tranny job is still holding out like the day it came from the shop. (125,000 miles ago)

I had the exact same problem with my old 96 Windstar. I spoke to someone who I have a lot of confidence in and he told me not to bring it to a tranny shop because they WILL tell you that you have to rebuild it. He claims that there is a good chance that it may be a sensor (don't remeber what the sensor is called though) that needs replacing.
Sure enough that was the problem and it ended up costing me about $200 instead of $2000 for a rebuild.
