Ford WindstarIntroduced in the mid-1990s, the front-wheel-drive Ford Windstar minivan campaigned with an emphasis on, and reputation for, safety. And in the hotly contested family minivan market of the time, that was an especially solid piece of ground to be on. As long as buyers didn't need to haul adults in back on a regular basis, the Windstar served a family's needs just fine.
Hi;
Gotta 98 Windstar. Air Conditioner just started blowing out the defroster vents. Sometimes it switches back thru the dash vents like it's supposed to, but rarely. I pulled the control panel and blew compressed air thru the vacum lines. Can't hear any leaks (don't mean much) but I can hear several of the controls operating when they are preassurized. I can find two silver actuators under the dash and can move the controls by hand. When I do the air comes thru the dash vents and will continue to do so until I turn of the a/c. Any way to test the functioning of the control knob itself?
Thanks.
Have a postscript here. The control switch that works it to A/C, heat, vent, defrost...no matter where that is positioned it blows thru defroster vents. If I change the switch that controls hot or cold (the one with the red and blue) then the air from the defroster will change from cold to warm. So it's either the control switch, or what ever it controls. I'm guessing. So whats that and how to test?
I have a '96 Windstar with identical symptoms . . a/c works, fan works, heat works, but only thru windshield ducts . . off duty tech at Ford dealer said the selector switch needs replaced . . I was here trying to confirm that will fix it. - Jim
I did a temporary fix on mine. Up under the dash on above the steering column there are two silver vacum operated valves. The lower one controls the air to the dash vents, the upper controls to the floor. I unbolted the lower one and let it hang. That pulls open the valve and forces the air out the dash vents. Not perfect, but better than the defroster vents. Problem of course is on a rainy day and my windshield fogs up, can't turn on the defroster.
