Ford ZX2 Ford ZX2 offers sporty styling, responsive handling, brisk acceleration, and everyday comfort and practicality for one or two people. Its back seat and trunk are fully usable. Yet the ZX2 is easy on fuel, and costs less than some base-level sedans. Gone is the smooth, grille-less look, replaced by a dark horizontal slash between the headlights.

Arrow belt diagram

It took longer than I thought it should to find a belt diagram on the web. So if anyone else is looking for one, here you go:

Make sure you are looking at the right engine, there are 3 in the picture. It's not the best quality, but it sure beats trial and error.

Guess what I get to do tomorrow?

I finally got around to changing the belt today.
I don't remember where I read that it can be changed without removing the splash guard, but I don't see how that is possible. Someone would have to have some paper-thin monkey hands to guide the belt around the pulleys properly with the splash shield in place. At least that is what I observed on the 2003 ZX2. The splash shield that needed to be removed was the right side one, held in place with 7 bolts with 10mm heads.
And I didn't have a good breaker bar with me, but that would be the best thing to use on the tensioner. I was at someone else's house with a minimum of tools in my trunk. What I had with me was adequate, but a long handled breaker bar would have been easier. I used a regular Craftsman 3/8 drive ratchet, short half inch (or 13mm) socket on the tensioner and a one inch box wrench for leverage. Crude but effective. I had a nice big jack handle, but it was too long to fit under the car and the ratchet was too short to use from the top. I improvised. I adapted. I overcame the odds. I used a bigger wrench.

The front of most Gates books have a really good section with belt routing diagrams also!

That's a good tip except that most of the parts store clerks around here are too lazy to look it up or make a copy I can take with me. I printed the large version of the image above and carried it out to the car while doing the job. And there is now a copy in the car along with the old spare belt just in case of road side necessity. That is more of a concern for me than having it available at home, with computer access, or a one time glance at the parts store. The replacement belt was Gates, BTW.

If someone wants a larger and slightly easier to read version of the image above, PM me your email address and I can email it to you.
