Ford ZX2 Ford ZX2 offers sporty styling, responsive handling, brisk acceleration, and everyday comfort and practicality for one or two people. Its back seat and trunk are fully usable. Yet the ZX2 is easy on fuel, and costs less than some base-level sedans. Gone is the smooth, grille-less look, replaced by a dark horizontal slash between the headlights.

The connector on the back comes off sometimes because Ford didn't give it a lot of slack. You'll have to remove the center console rear and front halves to get to the back of the cubby.

to remove the lighter assembly will require you to remove the center console assembly. This comes off in two parts. Remove the rear part first by removing the two screws nears the seatbelts. From here, lift the rear part off over the parking brake. The second part has two screws holding it down at the part that was covered by the first part. In the footwell area of the console there will also be some plastic clips that retain the front part of the console. Use a small screwdriver and pull the center part out (does not need to be pulled all the way out). After doing this the clips can be removed from the part. The front part of the console attaches to the cigarette lighter assembly at two point toward the top via two clips. Once the center console is fully removed, the lights assembly can be tended to. The lighter assembly installs in place using 4 press in clips. It can be removed by grasping the side and pulling forward. If you have the factory installed ashtray with the lighter, you will first need to unscrew a screw from the left rear of the assembly with a 7mm socket. The lighter itself is a screw in unit. It cannot simply be unscrewed, there are 6 points that have been pressed in by ford to ensure that this item does not come loose on its own. If the item is defective, this part can be cut off to remove the lighter. The replacement will come with a new part to install this.
This is a long procedure for a small part, so check wiring connections first as this may be the source of the problem.
good luck

I would borrow a lighter from another car first. Some times the coils just give up. For a few bucks you can save yourself alot of aggravation.
