Ford ZX2Ford ZX2 offers sporty styling, responsive handling, brisk acceleration, and everyday comfort and practicality for one or two people. Its back seat and trunk are fully usable. Yet the ZX2 is easy on fuel, and costs less than some base-level sedans. Gone is the smooth, grille-less look, replaced by a dark horizontal slash between the headlights.
I have a 98' zx2 that has been running perfectly until recently. About 5 days ago I was driving home (only a 6 mile trip) when the battery indicator started to flicker off and on really fast for just a few seconds. After those few seconds, it stopped and there were no more problems. My roommate took the car out a couple days later with no problems whatsoever. Yesterday I took the car out for another trip. (About 40 miles or so.) Everything was good until I was sitting in idle at a drive through. About a minute into idling the seatbelt light came on and stayed on even though the seatbelt was fastened. Then the tachometer started to fluctuate rapidly between 0 and 500 rpm. A few seconds later the low fuel light came on and I watched the fuel gauge drop from a full tank to about the half way mark. I pulled into a parking space, shut off the engine and restarted. Everything went back to normal. After about 6 minutes of driving it happened again as I was pulling into my house. Only this time the tachometer stopped registering. Again, the dash lights did the same thing. I cut the power and tried to restart but nothing. The car acts as if the electrical system is dead. (No sound whatsoever when the key is turned. No reaction from the starter or the engine.) Yet the lights, radio and all electrical components work. Please tell me there's a light at the end of this tunnel. Thanks.
My 98 did something very similar a few months back. Turned out to be the battery was shot and the plates were starting to break down. Replaced the battery and everything has been fine since. May not be your problem but when there's an electrical problem, I always start with the obvious, which would be a battery test.
