Default Interior heating problem

Again my 1998 Windstars' heating system has defaulted to the defrost position . i just replaced the rear heat /a.c. fan controls --3 months ago, and that fixed the problem , to even repair the roof a/c vents. I've checked all the vacum switches and they have suction. However, according to these threads---there may be main door of some type behind the dashboard. I removed the all the control panels and I'll be darned if I can find any such door. The only thing I see is white plastic block with wires on it--and no slide mechanisms . I even checked the red vacume line on the passenger side of the engine compartment--becuase we did have a mouse nest in the engine. Everything else works fine. Could there be a very small cut in a line that is contracting and expanding since winter is upon us ?
